Nizhny Novgorod, Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Ulitsa (Большая Покровская улица)

Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Ulitsa in Nizhny Novgorod is one of the oldest streets in the city; before the Revolution of 1917, it was the place of nobility and merchants. The stone buildings began to appear on the street since the end of the XVIII century, and to the XX century the street became overbuilt – the houses adjoined close to each other.

The first name of the street was Bolshaya Nikolskaya coming from the road direction toward the Nikolskie Gates of the New Prison.  The street was renamed in 1823-1824 after the construction of the bell tower of the Church of the Intercession (Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Church). The church doesn’t exist anymore; it was pulled down in the Soviet period; the name of the street changed too into Sverdlova Ulitsa in honor of one of the revolutionaries. After the breakup of the Soviet Union, the name of the street was given back to Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Ulitsa again.
