Church of the Resurrection, or Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood (Спас на Крови)

The Church of the Resurrection was built as a memorial in the place where Emperor Alexander II was gravely wounded in consequence of the assassination attempt in 1881.

The Church was upraised for 24 years (1883-1907) with funds donated across the nation.

The Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood was publicly-funded till 1917, for several more years the church existed on the charitable giving, at the end in 1930 the church was closed as thousands of churches in the country. The Government was considering bringing down the church, but the beginning of the Great Patriotic War in 1941 hindered the destruction.

During the Great Patriotic War 1941-1945, the building of the Church was used as a mortuary, after the war there was the storing place for Leningrad State Academic Maly Opera Theatre scenery.

In 1971 the Church of Resurrection became a branch of the St. Isaac Cathedral Museum. The Church was a dangerous structure, and it required immediate renovation. Reconstruction works finished in 1997, and the Church had opened as a museum. Interior decoration of the Church is an outstanding collection of mosaics, ornamental stones, and marble.

It has been established that terrorist Ignacy Hryniewiecki set off an explosive at the time of the assassination. At the Soviet time, the bridge near the scene of crime bore a name Grinevitsky Bridge, in 1998 the bridge changed the name into Novo-Konyushenny Bridge (New-Stable Bridge).
