New Jerusalem Monastery (Новоиерусалимский монастырь)

The New Jerusalem Monastery is founded in 1656 not far from Istra town, on the hill with the name “Zion.” Patriarch Nikon decided to build here the patriarchal residence. In Patriarch Nikon’s idea, there must have been constructed the topographic duplication of the Jerusalem’s Church of the Holy Sepulchre. The defensive wall with Saint Gates encloses the Monastery.

In 1966 Patriarch Nikon was disowned, and the patriarch residence became an ordinary monastery. But the monastery kept under the protection of the Russian tsars and emperors from XVII to XIX centuries:  the monastery had got lands, peasants, and finance for the repair and reconstruction after the fire.

The pilgrimage brought the hefty part of revenue, the amount of the pilgrims reached 35 thousand people a year to the beginning of the XX century.

After the Revolution of 1917, the monastery was closed. Since 1921 the local museum of history and arts was opened in the territory. Many buildings were destroyed and lost during the Great Patriotic War (1941-1945), the renewal was going on till 1960.

In 1993 the complex began to function as a monastery again, and the museum was moved to the next territory. The architectural and ethnographic museum is located in the former “Gethsemane Garden.” The wooden constructions reproduce the old mill, chapel, farmhouses, with arts and crafts exhibitions inside.
