Yasnaya Polyana, Museum-estate of Leo Tolstoy, the State Memorial and Natural Preserve Museum-Estate (Ясная Поляна)

The State Memorial and Natural Preserve Museum-estate of Leo Tolstoy “Yasnaya Polyana” is one of the most valuable objects of cultural heritage in Russia. Yasnaya Polyana is the Tolstoy family seat, Leo Tolstoy was born, lived and worked here.

Leo Tolstoy Estate Yasnaya Polyana

The novels “Anna Karenina” and “War and Peace” was written in Yasnaya Polyana.

The modern look of the estate was formed over a period of XVIII-XIX centuries when the lands belonged to the Volkonsky family, parents of Leo’s mother. The main house was completed by the Leo Tolstoy father in 1824. There is the main house, two wings, household buildings, the stable, gardens, ponds, and the large park in the estate.

The Yasnaya Polyana estate was saved through strenuous work of the Tolstoy’s wife Sofia Andreevna; she had done all the best to record and preserve the originals. One of the house wings keeps the home decor of 1910 since the death of the writer. The Museum collection contains the graphic arts, paintings, photography’s, letters, visiting cards and manuscripts, personal goods of Tolstoy – the clothes, shoes, clocks, gun, and others.

Leo Tolstoy accumulated a library of more than 20 thousand books; the Tolstoy library is included in the UNESCO Memory of the World Register.
