Qol Sharif Mosque (Мечеть Кул Шариф)

Qol Sharif Mosque is the principal mosque of Kazan city and one of the largest mosques in Europe that can host up to 1500 people at once. The Mosque was named after the especially revered imam of the Kazan khanate, Qol Sharif, who was killed during the conquest of Kazan by Russian troops in 1552.

The construction of the Mosque was widely supported by the Tartar people – more than 40 thousand people and organizations donated their funds for the development of a new mosque. There are books kept inside the building of the Mosque that have names of all the people who gave their money for its construction.

The Mosque was built according to the project of a team of Kazan architects; different decoration techniques typical for the area were used for decorating the interior of the Mosque – panels and mural paintings, stained glass artwork from color glass and mosaics, ornaments made from alabaster and wood as well as gilded elements.

In the mosque of Qolsharif

Qol Sharif Mosque is located on the territory of Kazan Kremlin. After the construction of the Mosque, there are temples of two confessions – Orthodoxy and Islam – inside the Kremlin now what reflects peaceful co-existence of both cultures on the territory of the Republic of Tatarstan.

People of other confessions are allowed to attend the Mosque. Qol Sharif Mosque is open both for personal visiting as well as for tourist groups. While visiting the Mosque, it is necessary to follow the following rules:

  • It is not allowed to enter the Mosque for persons being alcoholic or drug intoxication
  • Both men and women should wear closed clothes. Women should wear a headscarf and closed clothes. Men can enter the Mosque hatless
  • It is necessary to take off one`s shoes before entering the Mosque
  • It is prohibited to disturb or distract praying people during namaz (prayer in Islam). It is not allowed to pass in front of a person who is praying.

There is a museum dedicated to Islam on the basement level of the Mosque. The primary goal of this museum is to make people familiar with the history and traditions of Islam. The exhibition of the museum shows the history of the Muslim civilization of the Volga region from ancient times to the present day.

There are exhibits of historical value in the museum – books, manuscripts, ritual items, and information about famous personalities.

The Museum of the History of Islam is equipped with modern multimedia equipment – an interactive Koran, computer installations and information tablets.
