The Battle of Stalingrad

The battle of Stalingrad was an important battle of World War II that took place in the period from July 1942 till February 1943 on the territory of the Volgograd, Voronezh and Rostov regions of Russia. It was one of the biggest and bloody battles in the history – the total number of people killed during that battle was about 1 million; the defeat of Nazi Germany and its allies in the Battle of Stalingrad marked a turning point in the whole World War II.

The present-day Volgograd city used to have other names, its name was Tsaritsyn from 1589 till 1925, Stalingrad from 1925 till 1961, and Volgograd from 1961 to the present day.

Mamayev Kurgan

Mamayev Kurgan situated in the center of the city of Volgograd is one of the places where fierce fighting was going on for a few months. It was here where State Historical and Memorial Preserve “The Battle of Stalingrad” was opened commemorating the victory of Soviet Army. 200 stairs lead from the foot of the Kurgan to its top – according to the number of days of the battle.

The memorial complex consists of several objects built at a different time:

  • State Historical and Memorial Preserve “The Battle of Stalingrad”
  • Monument-ensemble “To the Heroes of the Battle of Stalingrad”
  • The open-air museum of military and post-war equipment produced in the USSR
  • Gerhardt mill building which was damaged in the Battle.

The Museum-panorama “The Battle of Stalingrad”

The Museum-panorama “The Battle of Stalingrad” is located in a building that was specially built for the memorial complex in 1982.

The museum is divided into 2 levels. There is a museum exhibition “The Battle of Stalingrad” on the first level, the second level is occupied with a circular panorama which is named “The overthrow of German Nazi troops at Stalingrad.”

The Monument-ensemble “To the Heroes of the Battle of Stalingrad” consists of a complex of the sculptures located on several squares of the Mamayev Kurgan:

  • the introductory composition “The Memory of Generations”
  • the square and sculptural composition “The Fight to the Bitter End”
  • the damaged walls, the composition is backed up by a soundtrack
  • the Square of Heroes with a sculptural complex
  • the Hall of Military Glory
  • the Square of Sorrow
  • the communal graves of the defenders of Stalingrad
  • the famous worldwide sculpture “The Motherland Calls,” which is the tallest non-religious sculpture in the world.

Gerhardt mill

The building of Gerhardt mill that was heavily damaged by shooting and intentionally left non-restored on the territory of State Historical and Memorial Preserve “The Battle of Stalingrad” in the memory of the cruelty of fighting.

The mill was built at the beginning of the 20th century and was operating until September 1942 when damaging the building during military operations stopped the operation of the mill.

Open hours and price

Monument-ensemble “To the Heroes of the Battle of Stalingrad” is open 24 hours and free of charge.
