S.D. Erzia Mordovian Republican Museum of Fine Arts is a particularly valuable national and cultural asset of the nations of Mordovia.

SARANSK, RUSSIA - MAY 9: Museum of Fine Arts named after Stepan

The museum is named after one of the most famous artists of the Republic of Mordovia – a sculptor, Stepan Erzia (Nefyodov) (1876 – 1959). Erzia is a pseudonym reflecting artist`s national belonging to Mordovian ethnic group called Erzia. The main Stepan Erzia creative foundation is carvings in wood and stone.

Stepan Nefyodov was born in a peasant family. At the beginning of a creative career, he worked at icon-painting cooperatives, participated in wall-painting of different cathedrals.

Stepan Nefyodov studied painting and then sculpture in Moscow School of Arts, Sculpture, and Architecture. From 1906 till 1916 the artist was living and working in Italy and France, absorbing rich European artistic culture, while searching for his own creative way.  At that period, the artist started to participate successfully in European exhibitions.

From 1927 till 1950 the artist was living and working in Argentine. After coming back to the Soviet Union from emigration, Stepan Erzia brought a large part of his artwork collection; more than 200 pieces of his artwork are being kept in S. D. Erzia Mordovian Republican Museum of Fine Arts.

The basis of museum artwork collection is pieces of art by such Mordovian artists as Stepan Erzia, Fedot Vasilyevich Syichkov (1870-1958), Ivan Kuzmich Makarov (1822-1897) as well as the collection of Russian art (icon painting, fine and graphic arts, sculptures) of 18th – the beginning of the 20th century.

The Museum collection is replenished continuously with pieces of modern art.

The museum is equipped with audio-guides including ones in foreign languages as well as QR-codes, and free Wi-Fi network.
