Rostov Museum of Regional Studies (Ростовский областной музей краеведения)

Rostov Museum of Regional Studies is one of the most prominent museums of the South of Russia. The museum collection includes more than 375,000 exhibits in the field of archaeology, the history of the nations of the Don Area and provincial towns of the South of Russia.

The Museum collection was started in 1910, but due to constant changes in the country`s administrative division, the museum changed its thematic scope several times at the beginning of its existence.  It used to be Don’s Soviet Museum of Art and Antiquities, then North-Caucasian Museum of Mountain Peoples, and finally in 1937 it became Rostov Museum of Regional Studies.

The museum was severely damaged during World War II. Its exhibits were moved to the museum`s basement, while a blood transfusion station was placed in the museum building. During 2 years of the occupation of Rostov-on-Don by Nazi troops, the building of the museum was destroyed; over a thousand of historical and cultural monuments from museum collection were plundered.

Right after the city`s liberation, museum staff started searching for the remainder of the museum collection and collecting new exhibits with the assistance of scientists – archaeologists, biologists, and ethnographers.
