The Park and Palace Ensemble “Arkhangelskoye Estate” (Государственный музей-усадьба «Архангельское»)

Arkhangelskoye2The estate in style of classicism was founded by the prince N.A. Golitsyn in 1784. In 1810 the estate was acquired by the prince N.B. Yusupov, who was known as a connoisseur of fine arts. It was him who laid the foundation for the estate’s museum collection of paintings, sculptures, arts and crafts, and the library.

The golden age of the estate happened in the time of the last owners Zinaida N. Yusupova and her husband Felix F. Sumarokov-Elston, at the end of 19th – beginning of 20th centuries. The greatest Russian masters visited the estate at that time – A.N. Benois, V.A. Serov, K.A. Korovin, K.E. Makovsky and many other figures of the Russian culture.

ArkhangelskoyeIn 1900 Zinaida N. Yusupova and her husband Felix F. Sumarokov-Elston made a will from which followed that all collections of objects of the fine arts, rarity, and jewels in case of family extinction must carry over to the State to hold them within the Empire for the satisfaction of esthetic and scientific needs of the Fatherland. 18 years later, in 1918, after the Russian Revolution, the estate Arkhangelskoye was nationalized, the next 1919 it was opened as a museum.

Arkhangelskoye Estate – is the only one integrated park and architectural complex in Moscow region which has remained till the present time. The Arkhangelskoye Estate is one of the largest museum-estates in Russia. The main part of estate buildings, interiors, art collections, and park are saved and reconstructed.

In 1980 the Arkhangelskoye Estate was included in the Cultural Programme of the Olympic Games.
