The Old Moscow Circus on Tsvetnoy Boulevard (Московский Цирк Никулина на Цветном бульваре)

The modern building of the Moscow Circus on Tsvetnoi Boulevard at night, Moscow, RussiaThe Old Moscow Circus on Tsvetnoy Boulevard or Nikulin Moscow Circus is one of the oldest circuses in Russia. The circus was founded by circus artist Albert Salamonski in 1880, and it was called after its founder – “Salamonski’s Circus.”

On the arena, the best-known artists appeared – animal tamers, acrobats, equilibrists, clowns, and illusionists. The circus always was in search of the new creative ideas – dancer’s performances were integrating with elephant’s show; the clowns appeared in a magic performance.

The Circus created the performances especially for children and began to arrange special morning performances for them.

In 1919 the Circus had been nationalized, and the former Salamonski Circus became the first state circus.

Special attention was always paid to clowns. In 1946 the Clown Studio had been opened on the base of the circus, many masters of clownery had qualified here. Yury Nikulin was one of them; he is the person who is known all over Russia. In the past, Yury Nikulin had become the General Manager and Artist Director of the Circle. In 1996 the Circle was named after Yury Nikulin.

In 1985 the old building of the Circus was demolished, and in 1989 the Old Moscow Circus was opened in the new building on the old site. The Circus obtained modern technical equipment, administrative offices, make-up rooms, and spaces for animals. The auditorium, only with little changes, was tried to be reproduced the way it looked before reconstruction.

Since 23rd of February 2018, the Nikulin Circus on Tsvetnoy Boulevard presents the program “Monte Carlo Moscow.” You can see the power gymnasts, and acrobats, horsemen, and the trained animals. Here you gonna feel yourself as a child – no matter how old you are!
